FAQ

KARATE

Q: How do I get started in karate?
A: Sign up for the gold belt beginner program either by email or at Jack Hunt’s Karate Club. Check out the class schedule. You can begin anytime because our classes are separated by belt level. Just choose the no/white belt level classes that are convenient for you.

Q: What time should I arrive for my first lesson?
A: Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow time to receive you uniform and put it on before class.

Q: How long are the beginner karate classes?
A: Typically the class is 40 –45 minutes and includes stretching.

Q: How often can I attend classes?
A: Look at the class schedule and attend the class for your belt level.  You can come as often as you like each week.  You can also come in to practice or stay after to practice. We have a large studio so there is usually room to work out.

Q: Can I attend classes with my child?
A: Yes we have all ages classes at every belt level so families can train together from white belt to black belt. We also offer a 10% discount to family members.

Q: What age can my child begin?
A: Usually we begin at age 6 because we feel most kids have the attention span at this age to get the most benefit from karate training.

Q: I would like to start karate but I think I am too old and I have never trained before.
A:Karate is an excellent program for an older adult. We have many older students at our school. You work on flexibility, strength, balance and coordination. The program gradually introduces techniques, as you build strength and flexibility. There is also a mind body connection component of karate. We don't focus on age. Our classes are filled with students in a wide variety of age groups, each with individual strengths and weakness. For example a 60 year old may come in feeling out of shape or not flexible while a 16 year old deals with finding balance after a sudden growth spurt. It is about a personal journey not preconceived ideas about age.

Q:
My kid is a teenager and worried about training with very young children?
A: Many of our students are teenagers and teenagers can attend the adult classes.

Q: What are the prices after gold belt?
A: We have a variety of shorter programs so you can sign up by belt level. Click here to get our price list after gold belt.

KickBoxing

Q: How do I begin?
A: Classes are ongoing just check the class schedule and find the days and times that work best for you. Please arrive 10 minutes early to your first class to register.

Q: I feel I am out of shape can I still attend KickBoxing Classes?
A: Yes. Our beginning classes focus on stretching and learning the techniques. We encourage students in our all levels classes to go at their own pace gradually building flexibility and endurance.

Q: What should I wear to KickBoxing?
A: Loose fitting lightweight workout clothes work best.  Long workout pants or cropped yoga style pants (not shorts) and a t-shirt or no-sleeve shirt. You do not need shoes, we workout in bare feet.

Q: What should I bring?
A: Water.

Q: Is there any contact in KickBoxing?
A: No. We hit targets and Wavemasters (which is a free standing heavy bag). You will not spar in kickbox classes. Sparring is done in karate classes at green belt and above levels.

Q: What is the difference between your Kickboxing and Karate programs?
A: Many of the techniques are the same. However our karate program encompasses more techniques including, sparring, traditional forms and weapons. Each technique builds on the other in karate which is why we have belts to honor the knowledge and ability learned at each belt level. Mr. Hunt was a sparring partner to kickboxers including world champion fighters. He designed the kickbox course based on the same work out kickboxers would do when training for a fight (with the exception of sparring). Our kickbox program is a conditioning program where you will learn correct techniques. It is a for those interested in martial arts and boxing but who do not want to earn belts or wear a uniform.

Q: What is the difference between your Kickboxing program and kickboxing offered at a health club?
A:Our program is nothing like what they offer at a health club! Health Clubs borrowed the phrase "kickboxing" to describe their aerobic classes which mimic karate kicks and boxing techniques. They are often taught by people who are inexperienced in sparring, martial arts and boxing. Cardio conditioning is emphasized over correct techniques. Kickboxing in is truest form is a type of martial arts which uses karate and boxing in fighting. Our classes are taught by black belts who have experience in karate, boxing and sparring and will teach you proper techniques.
